Does your cat suddenly run madly around the house, very often at dusk or dawn, when you are asleep? The zoomies I call it, often accompanied by loud meowing or yowling? Yep it’s the zoomies! Mr Ringo tends to do this less often now he’s older but still does it. Our older cats would always do zoomies after using the litter tray, it didn’t matter that they were getting older too, they still did the zoomies around the house often followed by a certain pong 🙂
So why do they do this? Well it’s a totally normal behaviour and your cats way of getting rid of energy that doesn’t get used up, because lets face it our feline friends are pretty lazy compared to their wild cousins….
The cat will run around, attack your very scary rugs and cushions and sometimes even run up curtains! Knock things off shelves and even run up walls and furniture. They just need to let off steam. I’ve noticed indoor cats seem to do this more, which makes sense as they aren’t getting outside for exercise. I often visit cats and find rugs and cushions all over the place. We have to remember cats are crepuscular, which means most active at dawn or dusk (when prey is out). If its keeping you awake at night one thing I suggest is play with your cat for maybe at least 15 minutes before you turn in for the night, to tire him out. So next time you get woken up by the zoomies, don’t worry its normal and you can always put the kettle on…….
