Before I became a full time cat sitter, I used to work in a feline only veterinary practice in Southsea and as you can imagine I got to meet many wonderful cats, all with their own different personalities. Tortoiseshell cats were often challenging and I often heard the vets and other nurses mention “naughty torties”. They weren’t really naughty as such but a little bit more feisty and strong- willed compared to others cats.
In case you are unsure a tortoiseshell cat is not a breed but a type of colour marking and the colours can show in many cat breeds, they also tend to be female, a male tortie is very rare indeed. Some people don’t believe torties are any different to any other cat in personality but these are normally people who have never lived or worked with them. I think the one cat I always remember at the vets, will be the tortie Siamese that made 4 people hold her while the vet just tried to look at her teeth! The vocals were SO loud the cats owner had to help us hold her too!
Therefore I was very excited when I heard one of my favourite feline experts Ingrid King of the wonderful cat blog The Conscious Cat was writing a book all about Tortitude! Ingrid knows her stuff as she has lived her life with many torties. This book is a lovely and interesting book all about torties, it has lots of facts about them and many beautiful photos of tortoiseshells from all over the UK and America.
